Mapping is done. Now time for the textures. I uploaded the hoodie map in Photoshop and started painting it. Since I didn't want it to be a simple black color I found a few textures in Google of dark cloth material. I wanted to add the sand clock from the reference so I put the map in a layer over the material and then added the sand clock over it. When I cut and applied the texture in Maya, however, it was all scaled wrong and duplicated. I've tried scaling it, rotating it through the projection menu in the attributes but it didn't work. This was the first issue that took me really long to solve. I've tried mapping it again and texturing it again but it was the same. I've looked for a solution on the web and nothing really helped so I tried to find a way around it. Since I couldn't find one I decided to try the other textures. I had the same problem with the head texture and the hand textures. |
I decided to separate the object which was a combination of the head, the legs and the arms since they were a whole thing before I cut the faces in the center. I tried the "Separate" Tool but for some reason it made the rest of the objects disappear except the selected one. Then I decided to backup my project and do the following: I selected only the faces that I want, for example one hand and delete everything else. I did this whit the whole body and separated the main scene into 5 - head, 2 hands and 2 legs. Then I opened my initial Maya scene, deleted the whole body and imported the scenes. I think this is a way around it since I had the body nicely separated.

I made all kind of textures and there was still distortion on some of the faces. Eventually what I figured out is that when I modeled the objects some of the faces are extruded and others are from a simple polygon. I can't say that this was the case tough but I deleted some of them and the using the "Append Polygon Tool" in Maya I added the faces again. It seamed to get rid of the distortion but it was impossible to redo all the faces that are distorted. And even though, the textures were still showing only on some of the faces.
Additionally, since I had a problem with the Duplicate Special tool I had change the Viewport to the High Quality one because the 2.0 one was turning the faces upside down on the instance, I turned it back to 2.0. After adding the textures on the body they finally worked so I made some changes in Photoshop like adding the beard, the eye scar, the tattoo on the left hand, nails and the folding scratches on the top side of the fingers. It all turned out great and was looking good. Then I added the little pocket textures on the pants and painted the shoes so that they look like real ones.
